Quilting Machine Operator-Weekend

Operates machines that quilts cloth and filler to form mattress pad bodies by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES?include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

When operating the quilter end of the machine:

  • Reads specifications to determine the correct top and bottom cloth, filler, stitch and trim for the order. Changes over machine from one stitch to another as needed by rearranging needle placement or changes over machine from one pattern to another as needed by changing roller.

  • Places orders in the computer for cloth and thread from Raw Materials Warehouse.

  • Loads thread. Threads needles and loopers then checks thread tensions.

  • Loads cloth and filler onto machine with assistance of a hoist whenever possible.

  • Depresses start button and machine automatically quilts or welds the cloth and filler.

  • Monitors quality of production continuously watching for skipped stitches, pleats, holes, mis-welds, burn throughs, in cloth or any other defect that causes a pad to be second quality. Adjust horns as necessary.

  • Communicates regularly with Cutpress Operator about specs, change overs, production problems, etc.

?When operating the cutter end of the machine:

  • Reads specifications to set machine to cut and trim pads to the appropriate dimensions and to obtain correct stack size.

  • Obtains appropriate bags and inserts as needed

  • Spaces stop gauge along calibrated scale using either a dial or computer, according to length of cut specified, and tightens setscrew to secure gauge in position.

  • Depresses start button to active crush knife or lever type blade that lowers and cuts material.

  • Check one pad per board to ensure proper cutting dimensions

  • After stack is complete, places appropriate bags and inserts in middle or bottom of stack to ensure they do not fall off, moves board to conveyor, scans SKU ticket and prints labels.

  • Contacts Maintenance Mechanic for machine problems outside operator's capability to correct. Assists Mechanic as needed.

  • Fills in at either position as necessary.

  • Maintains expected quality goals.

  • Ensures the next shift has enough supplies to continue operating at the start of the shift without delay.?

  • Maintains expected production goals and completes a production sheet daily to be turned in to the supervisor at end of shift.

  • Observes all department and company safety rules.

  • Maintains a clean work area. Uses air hose to properly clean quilter and work area at the end of the shift.? Properly disposes of trash, cotton splices and plastic at the end of the shift.

No prior experience or training.


Ability to read and interpret documents such as specifications, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write in order to record production. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to supervisors, leads and other employees of organization.


Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.


Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.


Requires lock-out/tag-out training.


Must maintain a good attendance record. Ability to conduct responsibilities of the job in a courteous and professional manner.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee frequently is required to walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 150 pounds; sometimes with assistance of a cart and hoist. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Hearing protection is required. Safety glasses are required when using air hose.


Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
